Despite extreme adverse situation, BNP is still popular: Khaleda

Dhaka: No matter whatever adverse situation is created, BNP is still a popular party, said the party’s Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

She said: “Any party can perform the role of the opposition party from outside the parliament.”

“Being the largest party outside the parliament, BNP is still popular and it will perform the role of the main opposition with the support of the people of the country,” she added.

The BNP chief, now serving her time in jail in a graft case, today made the comments while attending the hearing of Niko graft case.

Earlier in the day, she was taken to the court of Judge Md Mahmudul Kabir of the Special Judge Court-9.

Later, the court fixed January 21 for the next hearing.

On December 9, 2007, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Niko graft case with Tejgaon Police Station accusing Khaleda and 10 others of abusing power to award a gas exploration and extraction deal to Canadian company Niko during her tenure as the prime minister.
