Dhaka: The family members met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at the old Central Jail in the capital’s Nazimuddin Road this afternoon.
A four-member family team, including her brother Shamim Iskander along with the three other family members, went to the jail gate around 2:55pm and sought permission to meet her, sources said.
Three other members are- Iskander’s wife Kaniz Fatema, son Avik and Khaleda’s sister Selina Rahman.
The three-time former prime minister of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia has been taken to jail as she is convicted in Zia Orphanage Graft Case on Thursday.
A special court in Dhaka on Thursday handed down five-year imprisonment to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia after convicting her in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Court-5 in Dhaka delivered the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
Khaleda’s son Tarique Rahman and four others have also been sentenced to 10 years in jail in the same case.
Earlier, the court started reading out the summary of the 632-page verdict of Zia Orphanage Trust graft case at 2pm, soon after Khaleda reached the court.
Two other accused in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case are—Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal, and Sharfuddin Ahmed.
They were also taken to the court in a prison van around 9:00am on the day.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Court-5 in Dhaka fixed the date on January 25 after the defence closed their arguments.
On December 19, the prosecution concluded their argument and sought the maximum punishment for Khaleda.
On July 3, 2008, the ACC filed Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna police accusing Khaleda, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2.1 crore that was received as grants for orphans via a foreign bank.
