Khaleda’s bail hearing deferred till tomorrow

Dhaka: A High Court bench has deferred the bail hearing for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case till tomorrow as the record is not issued today.

The High Court (HC) was scheduled today to deliver its order regarding the bail plea filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the lower court’s verdict that sentenced her to five years of imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim was set to pass the order after conducting a hearing on the bail petition, according to the Sunday’s cause list.

The High Court fixed the date after Khaleda’s lawyer advocate Zainul Abedin filed the bail petition on Thursday.

The three-time former prime minister of Bangladesh Begum Khaleda Zia has been taken to jail as she is convicted in Zia Orphanage Graft Case on February 8.

A special court in Dhaka on the day handed down five-year imprisonment to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia after convicting her in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Khaleda’s son Tarique Rahman and four others have also been sentenced to 10 years in jail in the same case.

On July 3, 2008, the ACC filed Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna Police Station accusing Khaleda, her elder son Tarique Rahman and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2.1 crore that was received as grants for orphans via a foreign bank.
