Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants a free and fair national election and the Election Commission will create a level playing field for all political parties during the upcoming national poll after the announcement of the schedule, said Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
He said: “Our leader Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants a free, fair and credible election in the country. She also wants all [political parties] to take part in the next election.”
The minister made the remarks while talking to journalists after today’s meeting between Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikyafront and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led 14-party.
The Awami League general secretary said: “Today’s dialogue was fruitful and our leader Sheikh Hasina is ready to accept most of the demands placed by the Jatiya Oikyafront leaders. She, however, did not accept only a few proposals considering the constitutional limitation.
“We will not breach the constitution and that’s why our leader [PM] turned down some of their proposals. If we want to continue our discussion over the issue, the election can be delayed. So, no more talks will be held on this issue.”
Quoting the PM, he further said: “The Election Commission will create a level playing field for all candidates after the announcement of the poll schedule. And no ministers or lawmakers will enjoy the government benefits after that.”
“The ministers and parliaments members will not fly the national flags on their vehicles and will not even use any government car. All candidates will get the same opportunities,” he added.
Regarding Khaleda Zia’s release from the jail, he said: “This a matter of the judiciary. So, the court will decide whether she would be freed or not.”
