‘Polls schedule won’t be acceptable keeping BNP chief in jail’


Dhaka: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that the election schedule will not be accepted unless political prisoners including Khaleda Zia are released from jail.

The BNP leader made the comment while addressing a public rally of Jatiya Oikyafront held at the Rajshahi Madrasa field in the city on Friday afternoon (today).

“Create a level-playing field for the sake of acceptable election in the country,” he urged the government.

The rally of Jatiya Oikyafront was started at the Rajshahi Madrasa field to press for the seven-point list of demands made by the newly formed political alliance around 3pm.

The rally was ended around 5pm as per the local administration’s decision.

As Dr Kamal Hossain was feeling ill and getting a high fever, so he was not able to attend today’s public rally in the city.

Oikyafront chief and Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain was supposed to address the rally as the chief guest while BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was the key speaker at the event.

Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda has announced the national election schedule amid opposition from the political alliance for the country’s 11th parliamentary election on Thursday evening.

According to the polls schedule, the national election will be held on December 23 this year.

The CEC said: “The aspirants will have to submit their nomination papers by November 19 while the nomination papers will be scrutinized on November 22.”

“The deadline to withdraw the nomination forms is November 29,” he said in the 15-minute speech began around 7pm on the day.
