Dhaka: The sixth death anniversary of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi is being observed today with the law enforcement agencies repeated failure to submit the probe report into the murder case.
After the failure of the police and detectives in submitting the probe report in the twin murder case, the elite force started probing the case around two months after the gruesome killings on February 11, 2012.
But, the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) are yet to complete the investigation into the murder case in five years and 10 months.
The investigation officer sought time from the court 54 times for submitting the probe report in this connection. The last date for submitting the probe report was February 1, 2018.
Later, the court fixed March 13 for submitting the report as the Rab officials failed to make any progress in finding out the perpetrators.
In such circumstances, family members, relatives and the colleagues of the journalist couple are doubtful whether Rab is investigating the murders.
Contacted, Mufti Mahmud Khan, Rab’s legal and media wing director, said the investigation is underway.
Sagar, news editor of private TV station Maasranga, and his wife Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered at their rented flat in the capital’s West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012.
Their only son Mahir Sarowar Megh, then 5, was home at that time.
Soon after the incident occurred, law enforcers claimed to have made significant progress in the investigation. But, they are yet to recover the laptop that went missing from the flat of the couple after their murder.
According to sources, the evidence of the presence of two persons has been found in the DNA test carried out in the USA three years ago. A total of eight suspects were detained. However, Rab failed to identify the two persons.
Like the previous years, journalists will observe various protest programme demanding justice for the murdered couple today.
