SC upholds Khaleda Zia’s bail in Cumilla arson case

Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court order that had granted a six-month bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a case filed in connection with an arson attack in Cumilla on January 25, 2015.

The seven-member bench of Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order today following a petition filed by the state.

The SC fixed December 13 for next hearing, asking the authorities concerned to file a leave-to-petition in the regular bench.

Eight people were killed and 20 others injured when miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a bus at Jogmohanpur in Chouddagram of Cumilla district during the BNP-led alliance’s movement on February 3, 2015.

Two cases were filed against Khaleda in this connection.

Khaleda landed in jail on February 8 after she was sentenced the five-year jail sentence by a Dhaka court for misappropriating a donation fund of the Zia Orphanage Trust. Later Khaleda’s jail term extended to 10-yr in the case.
